This is an intimate coming-of-age story of a young man at the end of World War II, in the developing expanses of the Rishon LeZion colony. In this story, Mordechai Bar-On, a historian and former chief education officer, abandons scientific objectivity and takes on the mantle of a writer in order to bring us one place in the universe, a certain time, a unique soul of a person. Yoav lives with his mother. His father has abandoned him, his brother serves in the British army. The household customs were brought from Germany along with the furniture and literary tastes. The gymnasium students study with strict teachers, put on plays and cultivate curiosity. Youth movements supplement education with philosophical questions and discussions. This is the background against which Yoav's sexuality first emerges. Then Andrea appears, an Italian prisoner of war, an officer, an artist, who finds himself in the settlement and tries to pick up the pieces of his life before returning to his homeland. Yoav will change everyone's lives, and by the way, his own. "Andrea" is a novel that leaps back and forth over decades, moving between Israel and Milan, between youth and adulthood, between the finality of the past and the possibility that a person has at any given moment to regain a little of what has been lost. Bar-On chose to set himself in the abode of memory of a person in his later years: in this place, the entity of time does not exist and literature rises and rises as the ultimate inheritance of existence.
