In many ways, this book is a miracle. A miracle that can only exist in the literary space. The literary space is created by inventing an imaginary time, in a unique way with a personal voice and personal expression. Hereafter, "the style." To summarize in a few words a plot that is so nourished by its style, it can be said that "Between Life and Life" is a construction of personal; familial; emotional; periodic; multinational; and cultural memory. A construction of tone and tone, an invention of a third, liminal space, between people, between life and life. As in theater, the greatness of the novella lies in placing its actors on stage. In the case before us, a man who is no longer with us, residing in an unknown place and dimension, speaks to his wife and tells her story that moves back and forth in time. He follows her being, criticizes, describes, laughs with her, loves her. In the immediate tension that arises between the characters – with one living on Earth and the other who knows where – Esther Orner constructs a wonderful, microcosmic chamber work, a hymn to literature. There are great writers living among us who have not received the respect and recognition they deserve, perhaps because their language of writing is not Hebrew. It is time to read them and learn from them.
