The year is 1532. The geographical area: what we know today as Peru. The characters: Spaniards, conquistadors, natives, commoners, a ruler – people like us, who are thrown into a given land, into a specific point in time, although they, all, deal with questions about temporality, philosophy, economics, morality, sociology and personality. "The Gold of Cajamarca" is a metaphysical and epic novella disguised as a historical story, which chooses to be set during the conquest of the Inca Empire by the Spanish in the sixteenth century. In other words: the book is an excuse that gives Jacob Wasserman an excellent opportunity, not only to demonstrate to readers his great literary talent, but also to go beyond place and time to examine the behavior of the human soul in an extreme situation. All this in a short, gripping, suspenseful and tragic novella, in which the conquerors encounter Atahualpa – the last ruler of the Inca Empire. This is a meeting between opposing worlds, between completely different worldviews, and between civilizations with values that clash with each other. For us readers, “The Gold of Cajamarca” is the starting line on a literary journey into the depths of the world of Jakob Wasserman – one of the essential Jewish-German writers of the twentieth century who, historically speaking, needs to be rediscovered.
