There are works that, just by placing them side by side, can create another literary experience, shining between the two. Such are The Star Above the Forest, written by Stefan Zweig when he was 23, one of his most beautiful stories, alongside Seeing a Woman by the Swiss writer Annemarie Schwarzenbach, who at the age of 21 wrote a novella that was groundbreaking in its lesbian themes, as well as in its literary style. The common theme: the moment of love's birth. "Once, when François, the thin and meticulously groomed waiter, leaned over the shoulder of the beautiful Polish Countess Ostrowska at the time of serving, a strange thing happened. The affair lasted only a second and there was neither a twitch nor a flinch, neither a movement nor a shift. Nevertheless, it was one of those seconds that contain thousands of hours and days." (Stefan Zweig, The Star Above the Forest) “To see a woman: for just one second, within the short range of the gaze, and then to lose her again in the darkness of some corridor, behind a door I am not allowed to open — but to see a woman, and at the same time to feel that she has seen me too, that her eyes are looking at me questioningly, as if we were destined to meet on the brink of strangeness, on that dark and gloomy border of consciousness.” (Annemarie Schwarzenbach, To See a Woman)
