The probability that a chimpanzee from the rainforests of Cameron will be kidnapped to the United States, and after a year will find himself inside a ballistic missile, floating in space – is almost zero. But this is the story of Ham, and also of his trainer Bradley, a man who found a kind of true friend in the animal he was in charge of. In a certain sense, it is a love story between a man and a monkey, which the man is required to tame for a complex space mission. But this is not a novel that discusses the relationship between man and animal purely, but a fascinating existential document – microscopic (of glances and particles of moments) and macroscopic (a journey into the unknown that takes place during the Cold War and in the midst of the Vietnam War). Using rare literary tools in Hebrew literature, the first novel by Uri Gersht – one of the most prominent Israeli artists of our time – manages to wage a seemingly imaginary campaign that touches on the loneliness of all delicate souls, the destinies of life and our ability to act with empathy and compassion towards others. Reading this book is like looking directly into the blinding rays of the sun. Tears pool at the sides of our eyes, and our gaze – mesmerized and mesmerized – creates colorful dots floating in a dark space.
