"It wasn't the way he said it. It was the look out of the corner of his eye, which lasted barely a split second. The blood froze in his veins." The year is 1959. The German doctor is on the run. He has driven for ten straight hours. Now he is in a remote town in the Patagonia region of Argentina. He rents a room in a motel, states his profession: pharmacist. Despite the accent, his Spanish is quite passable. He eats a plate of lentils in the inn, hums opera, takes a sleeping pill and in the morning does push-ups. Ostensibly, he is a human being, an immigrant, another stranger who stops in a nameless town on his way south. But no; because throughout the book he is only a few millimeters from the Nazi doctor Josef Mengele. A scream comes from outside. The doctor goes to the window of his room and pulls back the curtain to observe what is happening. Several local girls are playing. Only one of them captures the fugitive's attention: an unusually short blonde traveling with her parents. Through them, Mengele will recreate his best obsessions regarding the purity of blood and race. The fates of the doctor and the family are intertwined. Their journey brings them through desert roads to the city of Bariloche, whose landscapes remind him of distant Germany. Mengele settles there, surrounded by fans, but not only that, he continues his experiments and even begins to produce and reproduce identical dolls made of porcelain. Lucie Poenço weaves in a modern dialogue that combines accurate historical references to get inside the head of one of the most perverted criminals of the twentieth century. The result is a chilling, sweeping, suspenseful novel, like a wave breaking on the shore and destroying everything in its path. "Vekolada" will grip you from the first moment to the last page.
