The author of the legendary cult work "The Lord Who Fell into the Sea" presents us with another masterpiece: this is a story about flowering and war, nature and humanity, set on the battlefield. This novel, which breathes and exhales existentialism in every word, celebrates the beginning of spring, even though its plot takes place in one of the darkest periods in history. Winston is just a man, an everyman, who during World War II joins the ranks of the Allies, fighting Nazi Germany. Thoughts about life and death lead him to conceive an extraordinary idea: he prepares to plant flowers in an uninhabited area, "No Man's Land," which is dotted with iron rods that will impale the soft underbelly of enemy tanks. Our Winston, who gave up his life in America, sneaks into enemy territory in order to complete his agricultural-poetic work. When dawn breaks, the Spring Invasion begins, and our hero is caught in a 24-hour battle, lying on the ground, caught in a war between man and man: one fighting to liberate the free world, and the other fighting to enslave it. In the background, the sounds of shells and live ammunition are heard, the music of cannons, but during the lulls, Winston manages to think and even dream. His entire life unfolds before his eyes like a fan and is put to the test: memories of life in dreamland, accompanied by existential moments. "Spring Invasion" will always be remembered as a thrilling and perfect work that was released at the worst possible time from a marketing perspective. The book, published in early 1940, describes a failed German attack on the Allied armies, taking place along the Maginot Line in April 1940. In reality, the Germans did not attack in April, but in June, and the results of the battle did not match what the author had imagined: the Germans managed to defeat the Allies thanks to aerial bombing. The book was quickly removed from the shelves and forgotten. What remains and is now in our hands is Herbert Clyde Lewis at his best - a clear and wise literary voice, who repeatedly grapples with the topics that always concern him. For each person writes only one book in his lifetime: here the gentleman who fell into the sea is not swimming in the sea, in an abstract landscape, but confronts a dark historical moment, with no apparent way out.
